2023 Income Tax Return Filing Deadline

Press Release | April 12, 2024

As the April 15 tax deadline approaches, the Division of Revenue and Taxation wants to remind taxpayers that they still have time to file their 1040-CM tax return. And, for your convenience, you can request direct deposit of your refund, ensuring a swift and secure transaction.

You can check your 1040-CM refund status by submitting a ticket on our website. Most returns will be processed by May 1, 2024. To submit the ticket, you must provide your Social Security number, filing status, and mailing address for verification. For those who owe taxes, it is important to file their tax return and pay the total amount due by the tax deadline of Monday, April 15, to avoid paying interest and some penalties.

If you are unable to pay your taxes in full, you can still pay what you can now and apply for an installment agreement through the Collections and Remittance Branch. Interest and late-payment penalties continue to accrue on unpaid taxes after April 15.

If you are unable to file your tax return by the deadline, you can apply for a tax filing extension by filing Form 4868. However, note that a tax filing extension does not extend the time to pay the taxes, and you should estimate and pay the tax due by the deadline to avoid some penalties.

Some people may be subject to special rules regarding tax deadlines and automatic tax filing extensions. Therefore, you should check if you qualify for these automatic extensions before the tax deadline.
